The power of a Functional Group

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Discuss with your small group some of the implications of the “Five Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni. Its a long talk, so start quickly to have some time to process.

1. How can we increase the trust in our group?

2. How can you show weakness in an appropriate manner?

3. How can we have deeper more significant conversations?

4. Where does conflict best happen?

5. How could we deepen our commitment to our group?

6. In what ways could we hold each other more accountable to our group? How do we avoid a legalistic spirit?

7. Suggest some ways to develop peer to peer accountability.

8. How can we tell if our group is getting better?

9. What would “improvement” look like for your group?

What a group

Luke 6:12–16 (TNIV)

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

REFELCT

What made this group great? What made it weak?

How would you like your group to be more like the disciples? Less like the disciples?

PRAY

God, our goal is for all of us to become one in heart and mind—

Just as you, Father, Son, Spirit are one.

Help us to be one heart and mind with you.

We pray that the world might believe that you, in fact,

sent Jesus by seeing our love for each other.

Let us be mature in our one-ness,

And give the godless world evidence

That you’ve sent Jesus and loved them.

A prayer adapted from John 17:20–23 (The Message)

The Five Dysfunctions of the Team # Five: Inattention to results.

I can’t wait until Sunday night. I loved this talk when I heard it in 2003. It made me a fan of Lencioni. I think it will help our groups get better.

REFLECT

Do we really expect people to change?

If so, what is the process by which change will happen?

John Ortberg (The speaker from last Sunday nights Summit Small Groups) wrote an interesting article about the change expected through life in the church,

“Hank had been a Christian for 50 years. By the time I came to pastor Hank’s church, he was an old cranky guy. He had been a member there since he was a young cranky guy.

Hank complained about his family, he complained about his job, and one day, he began to complain about the church’s music. He stopped people in the church lobby—visitors, strangers—and said, “Don’t you think the music in this church is too loud?” We sat him down and told him he had to stop that. I figured that was the end of it.

Several weeks later, I got a visit from a man from OSHA, the government agency that oversees safety in workplaces. I wondered, Why is someone from OSHA here to see me?

He began explaining dangerous decibel levels at airports and rock concerts. Then I realized what had happened. Hank couldn’t get satisfaction anywhere else, so he called OSHA to report that the church’s music was too loud!

I started laughing. I apologized to the OSHA agent for making light of the situation, but it just struck me as silly. The agent said, “You think you feel silly? Do you have any idea how much abuse I’ve taken at OSHA since everyone found out I was busting a church?”

Fifty years in the church hadn’t brought a smile to Hank. He was just as grumpy as he had always been, maybe more.

How can we help people like Hank grow to be more like Christ?

Hank’s lack of joy wasn’t only his fault. He hadn’t changed, perhaps because we didn’t expect him to. We expected him to attend, to tithe, to serve, and to stay away from certain scandalous things. But we didn’t expect transformation, significant change on the inside and outside.”

PRAY

Dear God,So far today, I’ve done all right.

I haven’t gossiped, and I haven’t lost my temper.

I haven’t been grumpy, nasty or selfish.

But in a few minutes, God, I’m going to get out of bed

and that is when I’m going to need a lot of help

Amen

REFLECT
What do you owe your group? What do you owe each other?
What is the difference in a low commitment and a high commitment group? In which is it better to be a participant? Why do you think commitment makes a difference in a group?
How often are you preparing for group and you are tired and not sure you want to go? How do you feel after you leave group? Are you glad you go to group?
PRAY
Take time to pray for every member of your group today. Try to picture them. Thank God for what you see they add to your group. Ask God to bless them. Intercede on their behalf if you know of a need they have.

What conversations are you avoiding?

5 “If a brother or sister sins, [a] go and point out the fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ [b] 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

Matthew 18:15-17

1Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. 2Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, 5for each one should carry his own load.

Gal. 6:1-5

REELECT

We listened to John Ortberg teach through the story of Ester. He talked about Mordecai. Have you ever needed to confront someone, but you just avoided the talk? Is your small group too surface? It might be that you are never going beyond the easy conversations.

What do you think conflict represents? Is it always bad? Always good? When should you say what you think? When should you hold your tounge?

Have you seen the television show Intervention? It’s an amazing process of watching people be honest with someone they love. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but they feel like they must try the way of sacrificial love.

Prayer Of Honesty

O merciful Father, I confess that I am in
bondage to sin and cannot free myself.
For I have sined against You in
thought and word and deed
by the things which I have done
and by the things which I have left undone.
For I have not loved You with my whole
heart and I have not loved my
neighbor as myself.
For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on me. Forgive me,
Cleanse me and Rneew me
that I may walk in Thy ways
and delight in Thy will
to the glory of Thy

holy name.

Two weeks to Summit Sunday! This Sunday night Small Groups will be taking through the Five Dysfunctions talk. Next Saturday, May 1, we will participate in Beautiful Day service projects. On May 2 our church will host Summit Sunday. In the morning we will hear from church members who have been influenced by attending the Summit. Then we will all hear Bill Hybles’ message, “Holy Discontent.” That night we will watch an interview from the Summit about Kiva. If you don’t know about it, you will be blown away.  The night will conclude as we hear about two economic development models being pioneered by some of our church members.

17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’ ” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”

22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely not I, Lord?”

23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely not I, Rabbi?”
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

27 Then he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the [b]29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

ASK

What does it do to a group when it knows that one of the people is not playing with the team?

When do people’s individual agenda upset the function of your group?

What would it take for your small group to really trust each other?

PRAY

O Christ Jesus,
when all is darkness
and we feel our weakness and helplessness,
give us the sense of Your presence,
Your love, and Your strength.
Help us to have perfect trust
in Your protecting love
and strengthening power,
so that nothing may frighten or worry us,
for, living close to You,
we shall see Your hand,
Your purpose, Your will through all things.

READ

12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
15 Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.
16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body.
17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?
18 But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.
19 If they were all one part, where would the body be?
20 As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!”
22 On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,
24 while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it,
25 so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.
26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.
29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way.

On Sunday night April 25 we will hear from Patrick Lencioni about the Five Dysfunctions of a Team. This will get you a jump start on thinking about how your group might need to grow.

A Quick Assessment of the Five Dysfunctions of Your Small Group

Instructions: Use the scale below to indicate the extent to which each statement applies to your small group. Be sure to evaluate the statements honestly and without over-thinking your answers.

Score 3 for Usually Score 2 for Sometimes Score 0 for Rarely

_____ 1. Group members are passionate and unguarded in their discussion of issues.

26 An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips. Pr 24:26

_____ 2. Group members call out one another’s deficiencies or unproductive behaviors. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the head, that is, Christ. Eph 4:15

_____ 3. Group members know each other and how they contribute to the collective good of the church. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 1 Co 12:27

_____ 4. Group members quickly and genuinely apologize to one another when they say or do something inappropriate or possibly damaging to the group. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other. Jas 5:16

_____ 5. Group members willingly make sacrifices for the good of the group . 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 1 Jn 3:16

_____ 6. Group members openly admit their weaknesses and mistakes. 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor practicing homosexuals 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Co 6:9-11

_____ 7. Group meetings are compelling, not boring.

14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 2 Co 5:14

_____ 8. Group members leave meetings confident that what they said will be completely confidential.

2 Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 1 Co 4:2

_____ 9. Morale is significantly affected when the group does not meet because people are too busy.

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,
25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Heb 10:24-25

_____ 10. During Group meetings, the most important and most difficult issues are shared. There is real honesty in the group. 17 An honest witness tells the truth, but a false witness tells lies. Pr 12:17

_____ 11. Group members are deeply concerned about the prospect of letting down the other group members.

22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. 1 Pe 1:22

_____ 12. Group members know about one another’s personal lives and are comfortable discussing them.

11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 Jn 4:11

_____ 13. Group members participate fully in the service actions of the group.

13 serve one another humbly in love. Ga 5:13

_____ 14. Group members challenge one another about their plans and approaches.

16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. 1 Jn 5:16

_____ 15. Group members are slow to seek credit for their own contributions but quick to point out those of others.

11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Th 5:11

Stepping out of the darkness

Sunday, April 18, 2010

READ

11 And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.
14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

TALK

Talk through these questions with your small group.

  • Identify your shadow mission, share it if you can or commit to share it with someone you trust this week.
  • What can you do today that will take power from that Shadow Mission?
  • What ways of living will keep you close to God’s dream for your life and increasingly far from the seduction of the Shadow Mission?
  • What conversations could you have even today that could make things right, even if they haven’t been right, inside of you or at your church or in your marriage, for a long time?
  • Is there someone in your community whose life is littered with warning signs and red flags?
  • Are you willing to be a voice of honesty in his or her life? Or are there things that people have been trying to tell you for years that you’ve chosen not to accept?
  • As you scroll through hard conversations you may have dismissed in the moment, are there patterns you’d rather not see, but in the quiet moments, recognize as true?
  • Is there a shadow you’ve been unwilling to face?

    Darkness Before the Dawn

    Saturday, April 17, 2010

In light of last week’s talk about pathway to God, why not take some extra time today for communing with God. Spend a little more time in prayer. Just sit. Maybe you should find a place in nature or with a good book or a good fried, God is waiting for you.

Get ready for Sunday. The talk by John Ortberg is fantastic.

We are praying that 100 of our people will attend the Leadership Summit at our church this summer. We are hosting the event live this year and it is a great honor. We are the smallest church in the smallest demographic market and we want to do a great job so that they can make this training available in other small areas.

We believe that the Leadership Summit  is one of the most inspiring way you can spend time this summer. You are worth it. Start now carving out the time in your schedule. Sign-up soon to get the best price. Go to www.lovingtheworld.com and check out the information and then sign-up. We guarantee it will make a difference in your life.

    When Shadows Turn Darkest

    Friday April 15, 2010

“Without Jesus’ sacrifice, without the indwelling of his Spirit, none of us would have the self-knowledge, the courage, or the strength to battle our own shadow missions . . . We would be a mere shadow of the selves God intended us to be.”

John Ortbereg, Overcoming Your Shadow Mission, 332 Kindle Edition.

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.
33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all
34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales
35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”),
37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.
1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.
6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?” “Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”
9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
    Ac 4:32-5:11

What was Ananias and Sapphira’s mission?

    What was their shadow mission?

What has God created you to be? What are you tempted to be?

    Pray

Pray that God can help you stay on the mission He designed you for. Maybe this little prayer might help.

My God, I pretend to nothing upon this earth, except to be so firmly united to you by prayer that to be separated from you may be impossible; let others desire riches and glory; for my part, I desire but one thing, and that is, to be inseparably united to you, and to place in you alone all my hopes of happiness and repose.
