Teaching in the Temple

John 7:14-39

14 Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.

15 The Jews were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having studied?”

16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me.

17 If anyone chooses to do God’s will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.

18 He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.

19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”

20 “You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”

21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all astonished.

22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a child on the Sabbath.

23 Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath?

24 Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment.”

25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?

26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ?

27 But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.”

28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him,

29 but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.”

30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come.

31 Still, many in the crowd put their faith in him. They said, “When the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I go to the one who sent me.

34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”

35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”

39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Matthew 13:54

54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked.

Mark 6:2

2 When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles!

Luke 4:22

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

Matthew 11:27

27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Luke 10:22

22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

It is precisely the gratuitous quality of God’s love, revealed in Jesus, that sets us free to work in the service of God’s Kingdom.

Henri Nouwen, We Drink From Our Own Wells, 207.

What was it that stunned the crowd and leaders so much when they dealt with Jesus? I think it was the depth of his love for God. They never could fit it all together. It seems so clear that Jesus was amazing. How is it that we have begun to treat him with such ease? Almost with boredom?

Journey to Jerusalem in Secret

John 7:10-13

10 However, after his brothers had left for the Feast, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.

11 Now at the Feast the Jews were watching for him and asking, “Where is that man?”

12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.”

13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the Jews.

Solitude is the furnace of transformation. Without solitude we remain victims of our society and continue to be entangles in the illusions of the false self.

Henri Nouwen, The Way of the Heart, 13.

Jesus went quietly down to Jerusalem. He did not need the crowd to make him feel comfortable. He didn’t even need the disciples to make him feel safe. He was at peace in himself. That should be the desire of our hearts. Wouldn’t it be great to be perfectly at peace with God? It only happens when we are completely alone with God.

Jesus Remains in Galilee

John 7:1-9

1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee, purposely staying away from Judea because the Jews there were waiting to take his life.

2 But when the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near,

3 Jesus’ brothers said to him, “You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do.

4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.”

5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

6 Therefore Jesus told them, “The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right.

7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil.

8 You go to the Feast. I am not yet going up to this Feast, because for me the right time has not yet come.”

9 Having said this, he stayed in Galilee.

The claims that daily living makes on us are so real, so immediate, and so urgent that a life in the Spirit seems beyond our capabilities.

Henri Nouwen, Making All Things New, 61.

Jesus was patient waiting for the “right time.” We are satisfied with “any time.” Jesus wants to nourish a patient heart in you in which you will prepare your heart and life in such a way that God can use you at the “right time.” Ask God to slow you down, to help you step out of the pressure of our world and stand in the eternity of the permanent world.

The Effect of the Sermon

Matthew 7:28-29

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,

29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Mark 1:21-22

21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.

22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.

Luke 7:1

1 When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.

Luke 4:32

32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.

John 7:46

46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards declared.

The desire to pray and to spend time with God and God alone is always growing. It creates in us a desire to be with the Lord who we have seen shinning through people and events, to be with him and him alone.

Henri Nouwen, Prayer and Ministry, 350.

Gauge your desire to be with Jesus as opposed to reading books about Jesus, or hearing others talk about Jesus. Are you amazed by Jesus?

The House Built upon the Rock

Matthew 7:24-27

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Luke 6:47-49

47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.

48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.

49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

This morning, while I was trying to say a few things with conviction, I found myself face to face with a man who was sound asleep . . . my words had absolutely no authority for him.

Henri Nouwen, Gracias, 125.

Get some rest tonight so at least you might stay awake in church tomorrow. Even better come prepared and with expectation that God is going to speak to you directly.

“Saying Lord, Lord”

Matthew 7:21-23

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’

23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Luke 6:46

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

Routines have a certain place in our lives. They offer us a certain safety and comfort, but when they become our main coping device, they make us rigid, even dead.

Henri Nouwen, Lifesigns, 93.

DO. Change a routine this week. If you brush your teeth then wash your face, flip it around. While doing the new routine ask yourself if you are just going through the motions and routines of faith, or are you in an intimate, living, love relationship with Christ.

“By their Fruits…”

Matthew 7:15-20

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?

17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Luke 6:43-45

43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.

44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.

45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

The Bible is not first of all a book about information but of formation.

Henri Nouwen, What do you know by Heart?, 14.

I love our cross decorating service. I hate the clean-up. I hate that it dies so quickly. I also come through the weekend with so many cuts on my hands. Roses are beautiful, but dangerous.

What we are supposed to do is produce life and growth.

The Two Ways

Matthew 7:13-14

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Luke 13:23-24

23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” He said to them,

24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.

The more we train ourselves to spend time with God and him alone, the more we will discover that God is with us at all times and in all places. Then we will be able to recognize him even in the midst of a busy and active life.

Henri Nouwen, Making All Things New, 79.

The narrow path is not a limited life, a life of deprivation, but a focused life, a way to live and be in all situations. It grows out of being intimately directed by God who shows us how to live our life in the middle of our confusing world.

The Golden Rule

Matthew 7:12

12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Luke 6:31

31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Every encounter in life involves the spiritual discipline of serving God in others and making known to others what we have seen.

Henri Nouwen, Living with the Apocalypse, 18.

If we really believe that we meet Jesus in every person, then we would treat people better. Don’t be in too big of a hurry today, don’t miss the opportunity to care for the Jesus inside of every person you meet today.

God’s Answering of Prayer

Matthew 7:7-11

7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

9 “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?

11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Luke 11:9-13

9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?

12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

John 16:24

24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

The interior life does not refer to the psychological reality that one reaches through introspection, but is the life lived free from the constraining power of the law, in the Pauline sense. It is a life free to love. Thus the spiritual life is the place of true freedom.

Henri Nouwen, Gracias, 133.

Jesus tells us that when we are in sync with God we will find God to be generous and a loving father. The question is not about the character of God, but our desires. Really seek God this week, not things.
