Jesus Heals Multitudes by the Sea

Matthew 12:15-21

15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick,

16 warning them not to tell who he was.

17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets.

20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory.

21 In his name the nations will put their hope.”

Mark 3:7-12

7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed.

8 When they heard all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon.

9 Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him.

10 For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him.

11 Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”

12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell who he was.

Luke 6:17-19

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon,

18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured,

19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.

I am part of the body of Christians who together form the living presence of Christ in the world. So my individual prayer is part of the prayer of the whole body. The life of the community is the life of Christ in history.

Father Henri Nouwen, Theology as Doxology, 97.

The crowd gathered to meet Jesus and be helped by Jesus. That still happens today as the church lives and cares for the world. Help meet a need today.

Healing the Withered Hand

Matthew 12:9-14

9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue,

10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?

12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other.

14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.

Mark 3:1-6

1 Another time he went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there.

2 Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.

3 Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”

4 Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.

6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

Luke 6:6-11

6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled.

7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.

8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.

9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored.

11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The knowledge the theologian aspires to is a knowledge that is essentially relational. We cannot come to know God outside of a relationship with God. To say it otherwise: knowing and loving are one in God. Those who do not desire to love God more deeply cannot expect to ever know God more fully.

Father Henri Nouwen, Theology as Doxology, 97.

How could people see Jesus heal and not be moved to respond in faith? They had the information, but not the passion. It is like a lot of people in church. They know about Jesus, but they don’t themselves seem to know Jesus. God asks you to know and love Him more. Work on one of those two edges. If you know a lot about Jesus spend time trying to love Him. If you love Jesus, spends some time learning about Jesus.

Plucking Grain on the Sabbath

Matthew 12:1-8

1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them.

2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”

3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.

5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent?

6 I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.

7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.

8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Mark 2:23-28

23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.

24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Luke 6:1-5

1 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.

2 Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

3 Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

I realize that my preoccupation with my sinful deeds is a way of avoiding a confrontation with my real sinfulness.

Father Henri Nouwen, A Cry for Mercy, 61.

The Pharisees defined sin as actions from a rule book. Jesus defined sin as breaking our relationship with God. How do you define sin? Ask god to reveal in you places where you and God have a broken relationship.

“Come unto Me ”

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The greatest spiritual danger for out times is the separation of Jesus from the church.

Father Henri Nouwen, Letters to Marc About Jesus, 83.

It is very tempting to take extra weeks off from church during the summer, but Jesus says the church is his bride. Jesus cares how you treat the church, don’t neglect it.

Jesus’ Thanksgiving to the Father

Matthew 11:25-27

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Luke 10:21-22

21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

John 3:35

35 The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.

As soon as we begin to divide our thoughts into thoughts about God and thoughts about people and events, we remove God from our daily life and put him in a pious little niche.

Father Henri Nouwen, Unceasing Prayer, 48.

PONDER. Are there things you only do at church? Is this a good or a bad thing? Think of one thing you could do to bring Christ into a more active role in your daily life.

Woes Pronounced on Galilean Cities

Matthew 11:20-24

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.

21 “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

Luke 10:12-15

12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

13 “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.

15 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths.

Jesus entered into Jerusalem on a donkey like a clown, That is his way of reminding us that we are fooling ourselves when we hope for easy victories.

Youth Camp 2009. Alyssa vs. Mattie. In the first image you can see that Alyssa is on a mission-soak Mattie. It was a water game. I love the unfolding drama as the table is turned on Alyssa. She started out on the attack, but ended on the defensive. I love the Nouwen quote for today. We are deluding ourselves if we think brining the kingdom will be easy in any want. The Text teaches us that even Jesus had a bard time getting the people to say yes to him. We are going to have to work hard and we should never underestimate our adversary.

Jesus’ Witness concerning John

Matthew 11:7-19

7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.

9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

10 This is the one about whom it is written: “ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’

11 I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.

13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

15 He who has ears, let him hear.

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 “ ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’

19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.” ’ But wisdom is proved right by her actions.”

Mark 1:2

2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”—

Luke 7:24-35

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces.

26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

27 This is the one about whom it is written: “ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.

30 But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

31 “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?

32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: “ ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’

34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.” ’

35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Ministers are powerless people who have nothing to boast of except their weakness. When the Lord whom they serve fills them with His blessing they will move mountain and change the hearts of people.

Father Henri Nouwen, The Monk and the Cripple, 207.

John had the power of his faith and the truth and he set Israel on edge, ready to receive Jesus. Aren’t we called to do the same thing? We could be like John. We don’t have to have unusual power, just tremendous faith.

John the Baptist’s Question and Jesus’ Answer

Matthew 11:2-6

2 When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples

3 to ask him, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?”

4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see:

5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

6 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”

Luke 7:18-23

18 John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them,

19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?’ ”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.

22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

23 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”

As prayer leads us into the house of God and God’s people, so action leads us back into the world to work there for reconciliation, unity, and peace.

Father Henri Nouwen, Lifesigns, 48.

Jesus answered Johns question by describing his actions. We really should be able to answer the questions offered to us about the reality of Jesus by pointing to the reality of Jesus in our actions.

Continuation of Journey

Matthew 11:1

1 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.

I’m wondering if a lot of depression, a lot of disappointments, a lot of sadness in our life is not related to the fact that we think we have to find the right word to say, that we have to make something happen.

Father Henri Nouwen, More Prayers, More Love, 13.

It is amazing how relaxed Jesus was in his life. He went and taught and helped, but never judged himself by numerical success. He just consistently offered the message of grace. Ask God to give you a heart to be consistently on God’s message.

Rewards of Discipleship

Matthew 10:40-42

40 “He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.

41 Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.

42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”

Mark 9:41

41 I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.

Luke 10:16

16 “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

John 13:20

20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”

The real reason we pray is not because it feels good. We pray because God is God and we are not God; we worship God, adore God, thank God, ask God and are continuously in communication with him, not because it is good for us, but because it is a holy obligation. It is a call, a reality, a truth.

Father Henri Nouwen, An Interview with Henri Nouwen, 64.

The danger of reward passages is that people might get the wrong idea. We don’t love God to get something, but there is a result to loving God more. Pray and ask God for more of himself, not for any reward. Results will follow.
